ABSTRACT

Research progress and clinical achievements of pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery in recent 30 years were reviewed. It highlighted significant discoveries and innovations in the field of craniomaxillofacial abnormalities, such as craniosynostosis, facial cleft, maxillary and mandibular malformation, and craniomaxillofacial trauma. Additionally, the author elaborated his opinions on the further developments of pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery.

ABSTRACT

With the vigorous development of navigation technology in various fields of medicine, craniomaxillofacial surgery has also entered a new eraofusing navigation surgery. It has a wide range of applications, which can be used in the treatment of complicated facial fractures, osteotomy, cleft lip and palate and other aspects. The aim of this review is to summarize the principles, developments, applications of the navigation technology in craniomaxillofacial surgery.

ABSTRACT

Traditional craniomaxillofacial surgery significantly affects aesthetic appreciation. In contrast to traditional methods, robot-assisted surgery has been extensively investigated because it is microinvasive, precise, and safe. With robot-assisted surgery, operational vision and manipulation space become extended. As a result, operational quality and patient's postoperative life are improved. This article reviewed the development of surgical robot systems and their applications in craniomaxillofacial surgery.

ABSTRACT

In plastic and reconstructive craniomaxillofacial surgery, careful preoperative planning is essential to get a successful outcome. Many craniomaxillofacial surgeons have used imaging modalities like conventional radiographs, computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) for supporting the planning process. But, there are a lot of limitations in the comprehension of the surgical anatomy with these modalities. Medical models made with rapid prototyping (RP) technique represent a new approach for preoperative planning and simulation surgery. With rapid prototyping models, surgical procedures can be simulated and performed interactively so that surgeon can get a realistic impression of complex structures before surgical intervention. The great advantage of rapid prototyping technique is the precise reproduction of objects from a 3-dimensional reconstruction image as a physical model. Craniomaxillofacial surgeon can establish treatment strategy through preoperative simulation surgery and predict the postoperative result.

ABSTRACT

Objective To present a new method of osteotomy for malar complex hypertrophy .Methods The operative procedures was transpositional osteoplasty of the malar complex by coronal approach. A lateral orbital osteotomy began at the level of the frontozygomatic suture line,preserving the lateral orbital rim. It continued far down inferoposteriorly across the zygomaticomaxillary suture line. The zygomatic arch was obliquely cut at 1 cm anterior from the articular tubercle. The bone was not separated from the soft tissue to preserve the blood supply to the zygoma and slid upward, inside and setback. The single microplate,screw and steelwire fixation was done on the repositioned zygomatic body.To zygomatic body prominence,it was obtained a satisfactory effect that only shaved the protruded zygomatic body with chisels by means of an intraoral approach.Operative procedures for reductive malar complex plasty were performed in 12 cases. The patients consisted of 3 males and 9 females whose ages ranged from 21 to 36 years.Results Postoperative follow up for 3~24 months showed satisfactory results using this procedure.Conclusion This modified method has an ideal effect without the possibility of bone resorption of the malar complex.
